I'm a procurement manager at a 40-person concrete subcontractor. That doesn't mean steel is always the right call. Aluminum can pay off in repetitive residential cycles where speed matters more than abuse. But don't choose a panel material based on the brochure. Choose it based on your expected number of reuses and the kind of site abuse it will see.
3. Look at the photos, then ask about the loose parts

Whatever system you choose, write down the counts and take photos when the equipment arrives and when it leaves. It's annoying until it saves you $3,000.
6. Calculate cost per use before you sign
Once you have the numbers, the math is simple: (purchase price or rental cost + hardware + delivery + repairs + labor hours × crew rate) divided by expected contact area and number of uses. I built my version of this after a $1,200 mistake on a "free setup" offer—the setup was free, but the missing parts weren't. Run the numbers before the sales conversation, not after.
When MEVA panels are not the answer
I'm not going to write a love letter to one brand. If you're forming a single low wall and never plan to do it again, renting a cheaper, lighter system might make more sense. Total cost per use only works if you get enough uses. To be fair, cheap panels are fine for a one-time pour where abuse and repair costs don't have time to show up.
There's also the local support question. A panel sitting in a warehouse is just a panel. The real product is the full system, parts availability, and a rep who answers the phone when something goes sideways. If there's no MEVA dealer near your area, freight and lead times can eat the savings.
So the boundary is honest: MEVA panels make sense when the math says so. A good supplier will tell you when you're overbuying. That's what specialists do.
Last honest note: know what you're not an expert in
I'm not a plumber. I can't tell you whether a solenoid valve is better than a shower valve for your project, and I won't pretend to that expertise. And I still don't know how to fold a fitted sheet—that's kinda outside my lane, too.
But that's exactly my point. I trust a formwork supplier who says "this is what we do well" more than one who promises to handle everything.
