Every time I open a MEVA formwork PDF, I think of a drum set for beginners. It looks complete in the picture. Then you unpack it and realize the throne isn't included. Formwork catalogs are the same: the panels are listed, the accessories are hidden, and the one thing you forgot shows up at the pour.
I've been a project engineer handling formwork orders for eight years. In that time, I've personally made and documented 14 significant mistakes, totaling roughly $76,000 in wasted budget. That's not a flex. That's why I maintain our team's pre-order checklist, and I'm sharing it here.
Use this when you're preparing a MEVA Lite or MEVA Imperial formwork order and you're about to download the PDF to pull panel numbers and dimensions. I'm not a structural engineer, so I can't tell you how to design a concrete wall. What I can tell you is how to avoid the ordering and documentation mistakes that hit your budget after the drawings are done.

1. Confirm which system you actually need
MEVA Lite and MEVA Imperial are not interchangeable. Lite is a lighter aluminum-frame system that's easier to handle on site. Imperial is a heavier steel-frame system designed for higher concrete pressures and more reuse cycles. If you're not sure which one applies, ask your rep before you spend a day pricing panels.
I went back and forth between Imperial and Lite for two weeks—or rather, ten days that felt like two weeks. Imperial offered more cycles; Lite offered faster handling with a small crew. I chose Lite because our crane time was limited, and that was the right call for that project. But I made the wrong call the previous year by assuming 'formwork is formwork.' The sizing, tie spacing, and accessory lists are not the same.
2. Find the current MEVA formwork PDF and check the revision date
Don't use the first PDF that comes up in search. As of January 2025, MEVA publishes current catalogs and technical data through its official website and authorized distributors. The PDF should have a date or revision number on the cover. If it doesn't, ask your rep for the current version.
I once priced a job from a PDF that was six years old. The panel dimensions were still right, but a handful of accessories had been renamed or replaced. My quote listed obsolete part numbers, and the distributor had to backorder replacements. That shipped late.
3. Verify dimensions and weights against your actual lift plan
Open the MEVA imperial formwork PDF (or the Lite version, depending on what you picked) and write down the panel widths, heights, and weights. Then check each one against your wall layout. A panel that fits in the drawing may not fit around a corner, a column, or an opening.
This is where I lost $3,200 once. I ordered 12 panels based on the catalog and didn't check the floor-to-floor heights. The contractor had a 14-foot wall; my panels were 13 feet. The mismatch didn't show up until the crane was on site. We had to refabricate one panel and add a filler. The client wasn't happy, and the schedule slipped.
4. Check the tie and pressure ratings in the PDF—don't assume
MEVA's technical PDFs include concrete pressure diagrams and tie spacing recommendations. Use them. I'm not saying you have to design the formwork yourself—your engineer will stamp the final layout. But you should know whether the system you're ordering can handle the pour rate.
I skipped this on a small retaining wall. I thought, 'It's only 8 feet high, what are the odds?' The odds caught up. A tie pulled through, the wall bulged, and the repair cost $4,800—give or take a few hundred for cleanup—plus a week of delay. The MEVA imperial formwork tie spacing would have caught it if I'd spent five minutes checking. Now I check every time, even if I've done the same wall three times. This is the step that hurts people who don't do formwork every day. A MEVA formwork PDF can list the imperial panels clearly, but you also need:
- tie rods and cones
- wing nuts and washers
- locating cones
- alignment couplers
- push-pull props
- panel hooks or lifting eyes
- wood or steel walers
- filler panels and stopends
If you don't line-item these in your quote, you will get a surprise. The way to catch it is old-school: keep a check register for the order. Not a full accounting system—a simple spreadsheet where each line item, quantity, unit price, and delivery status appears in one row. I caught a $1,900 duplicate charge for tie rods by using a check register on a large order. The vendor's system showed the line twice, and nobody would have noticed until the invoice arrived.
6. Set realistic expectations for concrete finish
MEVA Imperial formwork can produce a clean, tight concrete surface. But 'can' depends on the panel's condition, the release agent, and the concrete mix. A new panel gives a different finish than a panel that's been through 80 pours. The PDF won't tell you which panel you're getting.
This matters more than you'd think. If you're building a wall that will have tile, a flat surface matters so Schluter trim (or any edge profile) sits flush. The Schluter trim itself isn't formwork; it comes later. But the quality of the concrete behind it will dictate how the trim looks. On one job, the wall bowed 12 mm in 10 feet. The tile installer tried to fake it with extra thin-set, and it looked bad. The client perception was that the whole project was sloppy. It wasn't the tile guy's fault. The concrete face is the first thing your client sees. If it looks like a patchwork of fins and tie holes, they assume the whole structure is questionable.
7. Check site handling before you commit to a system
MEVA imperial panels are heavy. Not bad, just heavy. If you don't have a crane or telehandler, you may be better off with MEVA Lite or a crew plan that splits the panels. Check crane capacity, access roads, and pour sequence before you order.
I made this mistake on a commercial garage job. I picked Imperial because it was available sooner. Or so I thought. Then we found the site crane couldn't reach the back wall with a panel at full cable angle. We rented a bigger crane for a week. The rental cost wiped out the benefit of choosing the available system. If I'd walked the site first, I'd have gone with Lite.
The One Step Everyone Skips
Here's the step I didn't put in the numbered list because it's not about ordering—it's about organizing.
Rename every MEVA formwork PDF you download to include the system, revision date, and project name. Do this before you send it to anyone. 'meva_imperial_formwork_2025-01_rev3.pdf' is easier to control than 'Meva PDF final v2 approved.pdf.' This sounds like admin nonsense until you have three PDFs with the same product number and different load tables. A subcontractor will end up reading the wrong one, and your detail will be wrong. It happened to us in September 2023, and I still don't want to talk about the cost.
Three Warnings From My Own Mistake List
- Don't assume a used panel is compatible with your existing MEVA Imperial inventory. Check the generation and revision before you mix hardware.
- Don't order accessories from a different section of the MEVA formwork PDF without checking whether they fit the panel frame. The catalog is sorted by system for a reason.
- Don't tie your vendor down to a delivery date until you've confirmed long-lead items. Tie rods are easier to expedite than custom steel walers.
My experience is based on about 180 formwork orders, mostly mid-rise commercial and parking structures in the US. If you're in civil, tunnel, or European residential construction, some of the details will be different. That's fine. The checklist still works as a starting point.
The MEVA formwork PDF is a starting point, not a purchase order. The panels are the easy part. The cheap fixes are checking the revision, counting your tie hardware, and being honest about the finish and handling requirements.
