Last weekend was not a typical concrete-procurement weekend. It involved an outdoor shower, a graduation cap that didn't fit, and a video on how to trim a beard because I'd let mine go too long. By Monday, I was back in my usual seat: cost-tracking spreadsheets, panel lists, and the MEVA formwork catalogue.
I manage procurement for a mid-sized concrete contractor. Over the last six years, I've audited hundreds of purchase orders and signed off on roughly $210,000 a year in formwork and related line items. I don't say that to impress you. I say it because the advice below comes from spreadsheets, not marketing pages.
This article is not an engineering guide. It's a buying checklist. If you're about to order MEVA formwork or the parts that make it work, use these six checks before the purchase order goes out.
Before You Open the Catalogue
There's a reason people ask for the MEVA formwork catalogue PDF instead of just saying give me some panels. A catalogue forces you to think in components: panels, corners, ties, props, accessories. That level of detail is useful only if you know what you're building.
So answer these on a single sheet:
- What concrete element is being formed? Wall, column, slab, foundation, stair?
- What are the height, thickness, and number of planned uses?
- What is the planned pour rate? That affects concrete pressure and system choice.
If you don't know the pour rate, call your engineer before you call your supplier.

MEVA makes different systems for different jobs. A light wall formwork might be Meva Lite. A taller or heavy industrial wall might call for a steadier frame like Meva Imperial. A slab system is another world. I've seen crews buy heavy frames because they were on special, only to carry them around on a small job. That's not a cost sin on one order. It's a cost sin on every crane pick.
Checkpoint: Write the intended system name next to each pour type. If you have more than one system, group your order by system and make sure the technical capacity matches the pour.

Step 2: Count contact area and draw a panel layout
Formwork quotes are usually built on square metres of contact area. A wall 10m long and 3m high has 30m² per side, so 60m² of formwork contact in total, not 30. Corners, bulkheads, and closing panels change the panel count.
The surprise isn't usually the big panel count. It's the odd closing width. If you don't draw a layout, someone will order a lot of standard panels and then use timber on site to fill the gaps. That works, but it costs labour and materials the quote didn't show.
Checkpoint: Make a simple panel key, count every panel by type and width, and add a small allowance for damage and replacements.

Step 3: Price the meva formwork accessories separately
The catalogue page for panels is the easy part. The accessories are where reality shows up. Ties, tie cones, connecting wedges, bolts, lifting anchors, clamps, spares, repair products. The list is long. In two years of tracking our orders, accessory line-items added roughly 15 to 25 percent to the panel subtotal on full-kit purchases. That percentage varied with the system and with rental versus buy, but it was never zero.
This is where my gut-versus-data rule kicks in. At first glance, a panel-only quote feels easier to compare. My data says comparing panel prices without accessory quotes is like choosing a truck based on the cab and not asking about the engine.
To be fair, some suppliers quote an inclusive rate with small parts included. If they do, ask what the rate does not include. Freight? Unloading? Lost-part charges at the end of a rental? Get those boundaries in email.
Checkpoint: Itemize every accessory line with quantity, part number, and unit cost. If a needed part is missing, the total is not final.

Step 4: Model rental versus purchase using your cycle count
A one-time wall pour is often a rental. A core that repeats on every floor might be a purchase. But often isn't good enough in a budget review.
Take the number of times the system will be used. Add freight each way, cleaning and maintenance, repair parts, and site storage. For rental, add the loss and damage policy. For purchase, add the time value of money and any resale value if the system eventually leaves the yard. Compare price per use, not monthly rental versus purchase price.
I have mixed feelings about rental damage inspections. On one hand, the rental company has to protect its equipment. On the other hand, the small-parts list at the end can sting. The solution is not to avoid rental. It is to photograph the kit when it arrives and again when it leaves.
Checkpoint: Write down your expected number of uses. Then calculate your own break-even. If you don't know the break-even, you're guessing with someone else's money.

Step 5: Check compatibility with what's already in your yard
If you already own MEVA panels, the easiest way to save money is to avoid buying another panel that cannot connect to it. Ask your local MEVA representative whether the proposed panel fits your existing system. Sometimes it will. Sometimes it needs an adapter. Sometimes it won't.
The cost mistake happens when we assume compatibility because both products are in the same catalogue. Catalogue categories are not the same as connection standards. Check the technical drawing or request one.
Checkpoint: List the equipment you already own and mark which part of the order is a true addition versus a replacement.

Step 6: Ask for an itemized quote and one line for what's not included
When I get a lump-sum quote, my first question is: what is this number actually based on? If the supplier says the system is complete, I ask for part numbers and quantities. A complete system can still exclude the crane hooks, anchors, spreading pins, and repair materials.
Ask for lead time and freight method too. In one order, a rental quote looked lower for the first month, but delivery from the warehouse added two days and a surcharge because we needed partial delivery. The safest question is: Is there any line item that could appear on the invoice that isn't on this quote?
Checkpoint: Send the PO only after the supplier confirms what is included, what is extra, and what is provisional.
Mistakes That Inflate a Formwork Budget
Panel-only comparisons. It's easy to compare the headline price of a panel. But formwork projects win or lose on the total kit: panels, accessories, freight, handling, and small-part loss. A panel quote can look 10 percent cheaper and still be the more expensive system once the missing accessories are added.
Square-metre pricing without a layout. Per-square-metre rates hide the actual number of panels and the number of times each panel gets handled. If the rate doesn't match a detailed layout, it's just a ballpark.
Treating small-part loss as an accident. Cones, bolts, and locking pins disappear on site. I'm not proud of how long it took me to accept that. Now we build expected loss into the job cost instead of pretending it won't happen.
Verbal rental terms. If the damage policy or lost-part pricing isn't in writing, it's not real. I don't care who said don't worry. Write it down.
Cost Control Doesn't Mean Avoiding the Catalogue
I have the MEVA formwork catalogue bookmarked, and I like the PDF version because I can copy part numbers into our tracking sheet. The system isn't the problem. The problem is when we treat accessories as the extra stuff at the end. In reality, accessories are part of the engineered system. Count them, name them, and put them in the budget like you would rebar or concrete.
For us, this checklist brought accessory surprises down from a regular event to a rare exception. It won't make a bad pour safe, and it won't replace an engineer's load calculation. But it will make the buying conversation clearer. And once the formwork cost is under control, you can get back to the important stuff, like figuring out whether that beard trimmer really comes with a number three guard.
