How to Check Vinyl Siding Before You Pour: A Quality Inspector's 5-Step Formwork Checklist

If you're a project manager, formwork engineer, or site supervisor working on residential or light-commercial concrete projects where vinyl siding meets a concrete pour—this is for you. It's also for anyone asking the same question I get every quarter: "Can you paint vinyl siding before we set the forms?" (Short answer: yes, but only if you follow the prep steps. This checklist covers 5 steps. Step 3 is the one most teams skip. Don't be that team.

Step 1: Check the Vinyl's Age and Condition

Don't assume new siding is 'good enough'. I've rejected batches where the vinyl was visibly warped or had micro-cracks from storage. These defects get magnified once the formwork presses against them.

  • Inspect for cracks, chips, or UV damage — especially on south-facing walls.
  • Confirm the vinyl is rated for outdoor exposure (most modern vinyl is, but some budget lines aren't).
  • Check manufacturer's temperature range. If the pour happens below 40°F, some vinyl becomes brittle. I learned this the hard way during a January project.

When I first started reviewing siding readiness, I assumed any new vinyl was fine. Four years and roughly 200+ deliveries later, I know better. That assumption cost us a $22,000 redo when micro-cracking caused a bulge during the pour.

Step 2: Surface Prep for Painting (If You Need to Paint)

So, can you paint vinyl siding? Yes—but the prep is non-negotiable. Here's the process I verify before every spec review:

  1. Clean the siding thoroughly. Pressure wash with a mild detergent. Remove dirt, mildew, and any chalky residue. If water beads up instead of running off, you've got a contaminant layer.
  2. Let it dry completely. At least 24 hours of good weather. I've seen rushed projects where the paint peeled off within weeks because the vinyl was still damp.
  3. Use a bonding primer. Not all primers stick to vinyl. Use one specifically designed for PVC/vinyl surfaces. Regular latex primer will crack.
  4. Paint with a high-quality exterior acrylic latex. Dark colors? Be careful—they absorb heat and can cause the vinyl to warp. Stick to colors with a Light Reflectance Value (LRV) above 55.

Per industry best practices (ASTM D7861 for vinyl coatings), the paint must be flexible enough to handle thermal expansion. A rigid paint will crack in the first summer cycle.

Step 3: The Step Everyone Forgets: Clearance & Thermal Movement

Here's the kicker. Vinyl expands and contracts with temperature. If you set your formwork tight against the siding without leaving a gap, the concrete pour can trap the vinyl and cause buckling.

What I check:

  • Minimum 1/8" gap between the formwork and the siding surface (1/4" is safer).
  • Use a compressible foam strip in the gap to prevent concrete seepage.
  • Avoid direct pressure on the siding from formwork wedges or braces. Any weight transfers stress.

Step 4: Protect the Siding During the Pour

Even with good prep, concrete splatter on vinyl is a pain to clean. And if it hardens before you notice, you're looking at scratched siding or a repaint.

Step 5: Post-Pour Inspection & Cleanup

After the forms come down, don't just walk away. A quick check saves headaches later.

  1. Remove all tape and sheeting carefully—no ripping off paint or vinyl finish.
  2. Inspect the siding for any dents, cracks, or residue. If you see hardened concrete, scrape gently with a plastic scraper (never metal).
  3. Check the gap area for any concrete that may have seeped behind the foam. If found, flush it out with water before it sets fully.
  4. Document the condition. Take photos for your records. If a warranty claim arises later, you'll have proof.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Painting vinyl without primer. I don't care how much the paint store says it's "self-priming." Don't risk it. A separate primer is cheaper than a repaint.
  • Skipping the expansion gap. I know it feels like extra work. It's not—it's insurance.
  • Using metal scrapers on vinyl. You'll leave scratches that collect dirt. Use plastic or a putty knife with the corners rounded.
  • Ignoring temperature during the pour. Cold vinyl + hot concrete = thermal shock. That's how you get cracks you didn't see before.
