Emergency Formwork, Shower Niches, and a Bathtub Faucet: A MEVA Story
Thursday, 5:42 PM. I was already out the door when my phone rang. If you've ever had a contractor walk off a job, you know the sound of that call. It's not a question. It's a plea.
Mike was a small general contractor building a two-unit duplex. His concrete sub had quit that afternoon. The wall for the new shower/tub area was supposed to be poured in four days. He needed formwork. He needed it fast. And he needed it from someone who wouldn't laugh at the size of his order.
I'm an applications specialist at MEVA Formwork Systems Inc. In my role coordinating formwork solutions for clients, I've handled 200+ rush orders in the last eight years. Most of them are big commercial jobs. This one wasn't. It was a wall about 8 feet wide and 9 feet high—the kind of order that can drift until Monday. But Mike had paid us for a small foundation a year earlier, and I'd told him we'd be there when he needed us. This was that moment.
The Friday Call
“Can you get me panels by Saturday?” he asked.

On a tile shower, builders usually make the niche out of studs and cement board. On a poured concrete wall, you set a box into the formwork before you pour. If the box moves, the whole wall looks wrong.
Mike's niche spec called for a 5-inch-deep recess in an 8-inch wall. In theory, that leaves 3 inches of concrete behind the niche. In practice, it leaves less because the rebar needs cover, and the tile install needs a clean surface. The first red flag was the depth. We pulled out a tape measure, added the rebar clearance, and discovered the spec was so tight that the back of the niche would have been barely an inch thick. Bad idea.
I told Mike we had to shave an inch off the niche depth and add a ledger at the back. Not a fun call to make at night. But he said, “If it's wrong, better to know now.” That's the kind of contractor small suppliers want to keep—no panic, no blame, just solve it.
So we rebuilt the niche box. We gave it a two-degree taper so it would strip cleanly from the concrete. We fixed it to the Imperial panels at four points so vibration during the pour wouldn't push it out of plumb. The cement board and tile would go in later, and the edge would be finished with metal trim. But the geometry had to be right before the pour. Not ideal, but workable.
The Bathtub Faucet Question
And then there was the bathtub. The same unit had a tub next to the shower, and the plumber had quit with the rest of the crew. Mike had a great shop and a steady hand, but no clue how to install bathtub faucet without an access panel. The catch? There was no place for an access panel. The shower wall was going to be sealed on both sides.
That was a genuine deal-breaker for code. A tub faucet valve needs to be serviceable. We had maybe one evening to figure it out. In the end, the solution was simple: install an access door on the adjacent room's side and cover it with tile. The valve gets a union on the supply lines so it can be replaced without cutting pipe. It's not glamorous. It's smart.
If you've ever tried to explain to a homeowner why you're about to cut a hole in a brand-new wall, you know exactly how that conversation goes. But Mike didn't need convincing. He just needed a plan.
Pour Day
Saturday morning, the truck arrived. My manager had approved a small order to a site that wasn't in our system. We don't normally do that. Small customers don't need big-customer bureaucracy; they need a yes.
We set the panels with the tie pattern from the catalogue. The panels locked together quickly, which is the whole point of a modular system. We fixed the niche box in position, gave it a coat of release agent, and ran a stringline across the face to make sure it wasn't bowing. Then we walked away.

I've stripped a lot of walls in my time, and this one was clean—no honeycomb, no fins, no tie holes that looked like Swiss cheese. The niche opening sat within a quarter inch of the drawing. For a custom box on a rush wall, that's exactly what we needed.
Mike's tile guy showed up two days later. He set the tile inside the niche and around the opening, then wrapped the edge with Schluter trim—a brushed nickel profile that turned a plain concrete recess into a detail you'd find in a hotel shower. I'd never paid much attention to tile trims before. That changed.
“If the niche had been a sixteenth wider, this trim would have been a nightmare,” he said. He wasn't complaining. He was just letting us know the formwork tolerances mattered. In the end, the niche looked intentional.
That same week, Mike and I followed the manufacturer's installation guide for the tub valve. We learned how to install bathtub faucet properly: valve backing, depth of the trim, access on the other side. It wasn't the hardest plumbing job in the world, but it was exactly the kind of job that becomes a $2,000 repair if you guess.
What I'd Do Differently
That project ended on Friday when the tenant moved in—six days after the call, on schedule. The inspection passed, no leaks, no change orders. The client paid the invoice in 48 hours.
Looking back, I should have asked for the tile thickness before we built the niche box. At the time, the drawing assumed 1/2-inch tile. If it had been 3/8 or 3/4, the Schluter trim would have sat proud or sunk against the plane of the wall. We got lucky. A lot of contractors would have blamed the formwork, and they'd be partly right. The fix for that is a 30-second question before you build the box, not a debate after the fact.
Another thing: I should have shipped the niche box with an extra set of tie plates. Standard inventory was enough. Close only counts in horseshoes. When a crew is pouring against a deadline, extra hardware is cheap insurance.
The conventional wisdom in my industry is to avoid starting a rush order on a Friday afternoon, especially for a small project. Our dispatch sheet says otherwise. In 2024, we took 47 rush orders, and 44 of them hit the date we promised. That's a 94% record, and it's built on small projects like this one. It's not always pretty. But it's real.
Bottom line: Small orders aren't small to the people who place them. Mike's $1,800 foundation had turned into a $9,200 formwork rental and a referral to two other local builders by the time we packed up the last panel. Today's small client is tomorrow's repeat customer. Simple as that.
